When Dorian Gray, a handsome young man, has his portrait painted by the artist Basil Hallward, it is the first step in Gray's path towards debauchery, degredation and murder. He sells his soul for eternal youth, and whilst his face continues to retain the same youthful beauty, his portrait (hidden from sight) hideously ages as it becomes a record of all his sins and transgressions. This late Victorian gothic-philosophical tale was Oscar Wilde's only novel, and proved highly controversial when it when it was first published in 1890.
