The perfect gift for an opera lover! This is a 1953 Pelican edition of "Opera" by Edward J. Dent. It is an illustrated survey of the nature and development of an art which was described by Dr Johnson as "an exotic and irrational entertainment". Dent examines the relationship between music amd drama and the idea of singing a play. He also considers the development of this art from the seventeenth century onwards. He looks at the great names of opera and analyses the conventions of opera. The book includes a number of photographs and is also illustrated by the wonderful Kay Ambrose.
