In 1757 Moonfleet has fallen on hard times and most of its two hundred inhabitants are fishermen, or smugglers. The hero of this story is fifteen-year-old John Trenchard, whose inquisitive nature leads him into smuggling, then a flight to Holland, with a price on his head and a long-lost treasure in his possession. Moonfleet was first published in 1898. This 1978 Puffin edition is illustrated by F. R. Exell.
